There are many traditional beliefs and teachings concerning tithing of which many of them are based on a few popular verses of scripture. These doctrines tend to ignore other relevant scriptures pertaining to the subject matter. When you build doctrine around a few isolated scriptures without taking into account other pertinent and relevant scriptures, the result is manmade doctrine which perverts the truth.
To understand tithing we must first understand the the purpose of it. Without that understanding confusion and false teachings on the matter are inevitable. So let go back to the beginning and first discover the purpose of tithing. Tithing was centered around the offering up to God three primary sacrificial elements.
- Herb or Vegetation
- Animals &
- Blood
So to start out, lets begin by investigating these elements of sacrifice.
God’s Food Provision for Mankind
Gen 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
God’s Food Provision for Animals
Gen 1:30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein [there is] life, [I have given] every green herb for meat: and it was so.

Food is the solid substance mankind needs to sustain life. When he sacrifices food he is giving up something he needs to sustain his life.
Plants do not have flesh and blood, as do humans and animals. The blood is the vital life force of flesh beings.
Lev 17:11 | for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the LORD. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible. |

The life of every creature is in its blood. That is why I have said to the people of Israel, ‘You must never eat or drink blood, for the life of any creature is in its blood.’ So whoever consumes blood will be cut off from the community. |

But never consume the blood, for the blood is the life, and you must not consume the life blood with the meat. |
Innocent Human Blood is the Only Satisfactory Payment for Sin
Sin is the transgression of God’s law and there is no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of innocent blood.
When Adam and Eve sinned, they realized that they were naked. They tried to cover their nakedness with fig leaves. But instead, God killed an innocent animal to cover their nakedness. This was done to teach mankind that his own efforts are insufficient to cover his sin and that innocent blood had to be shed to cover man’s sin and only God can provide a sufficient covering.
Man had two choices for paying the price for sin.
- He could pay for it with his own blood, which means he would have to be executed.
- He can give a substitute payment by killing an animal of his possession and offering the blood of that animal up to God as a substitute payment for his sin. Instead of the sinner having to be executed, God accepted temporarily a good faith IOU form of payment from man. This substitute payment was inadequate to satisfy the sin debt.
God Provided a Temporary Substitute Atonement System
But just as God had provided a temporary covering for Adam and Eve’s nakedness, He also had a plan to atone for their sin and wipe out their sin debt. But until the appointed time for that plan to be unveiled, God instituted a substitute system of atonement for preserving mankind upon the earth until He rolled out His perfect master plan of reconciling mankind back to Him.
